Paul Mayer
High Seat
Paul Mayer’s photographs take up the aesthetic appeal of hunting blinds. Mayer documents the quite unprepossessing architecture, although it hardly perceived as such, of these hunting facilities, whose diversity of design seems nearly inexhaustible—idiosyncratic, at times whimsical and foolhardy structures nestled self-sufficiently into the landscape. With their formal reduction, the abstractly composed and contemplative black-and-white photos underscore the anarchic quality of the structures and transport the viewer into an unexpected universe. Once the gaze has taken in the scent of the blinds, let the hunt begin.
Paul Mayer was born in Erlangen in 1965 and is a graduate geographer (focus on climate-geomorphology & forest ecology), editor at the european pressphoto agency (epa), and photographer.
