K.H. Hödicke

charcoal drawings 1975–1982

K.H. Hödicke is one of the most important pioneers of New Figuration in Germany. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, his large-format charcoal drawings are being published as an artist’s book. His entire spectrum – from von precise, fast sketches to modulated paintings – is presented. The collection concentrates on the second half of the 1970s when Hödicke developed his distinctive expression of figurative painting, whose influence on the young Berlin art scene of the 1980s cannot be underestimated. The drawings cover the theme of the lived environment of Berlin in wonderful cityscapes, studio pictures, interiors and portraits. Between the city paintings are sketches (direct or ironically interrupted views) of Lapland and Thailand.
