Frank Herzog
Back to Art History
This catalogue presents several new groups of work by Frank Herzog, for example, the Fräulein portraits (paintings) and the Fräulein vases (sculptures). Fräulein, a toy spaniel, is the key figure. Over the centuries, this breed of dog, a descendent of the Phalène breed, has been a common and popular motif in the history of art. It is often an attribute in portraits, but is almost never the main theme of a painting. Herzog turns this around: the little dog is to be found in all of his Mädchen portraits, and the dog plays the leading role. In addition to this motif, several different threads of art history are also interlinked in Frank Herzog’s complex paintings and sculptures.
