Sacri Monti

„Sacri Monti“, Holy Mountains, is the name given to nine Catholic pilgrimage sites, built in the 17th and late 16th century. Heavily populated scenes depict biblical stories about Jesus and various saints in somewhat rambling chapel buildings. Symbolic and spiritual meaning overlap, while terracotta figures and illusionistic painting blend into “complete works of art” of bizarre beauty. In his new series of photos entitled Sacri Monti, Bertram Kober discovers this seemingly absurd theatre of figures and presents it with new perspectives and mood lighting. Kober’s camera views the world anew with a deeper meaning – he is not interested in mere surfaces – and his photographs draw the viewer into the dynamic of the religious stories in a manner that is dramatic, striking, poetic and perceptive.
