Rowena Dring
Falls the Shadow
It is only on closer inspection that we realise that Rowena Dring’s works are not painted but are in fact stitched fabric over canvas. The artist uses photos that she has taken herself on her many travels. She then processes these photos using various digital filters to simplify the motifs, state them more precisely and in doing so reduce them to eye-catching contours and spaces. The artist sews together the remnants of the original detailed photos using fragments of cotton. From a distance, the result is an abundant single entity but when viewed up close, the images disintegrate into large-scale abstractions, which are only reminiscent of general images.
Rowena Dring scrutinises the issue of perception in relation to space and time. The artist is a romantic in the true sense, searching for moments at which the rational availability of the image fades. Rowena Dring succeeds in achieving this openness in her visual language primarily because each of her visual arrangements is deliberately balanced.
