Many Dead in the Homeland: Fanta, Sprite, UHT Milk, Micky and Donald! Paintings 1999–2009
André Butzer calls his art “Science Fiction Expressionism”. In his large format paintings he cites comics and pop culture, mixes the trivial with historical references and moves between figurative motifs and monochrome abstraction. There are references to Asger Jorn and Edvard Munch as well as a debate with the non-representational paintings of Albert Oehlen. Abstracts, at times ornamental, elements are united with representational, fantastic, childlike and grotesque figuration. The most recent works however move further away from this towards abstraction. Although the stories of the earlier works also resonate here – existing like an invisible film underneath – these are no longer portrayed figuratively.
