1889 born in Chemnitz
1908–1914 studies at the Dresden Kunstakademie (Academy of Fine Arts) 
1914–1918 engaged in military service, frontline duty
1932 appointed to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts; 1935 appointed as professor; 1939 dismissed
1945 loses many works during the bombing of Dresden; begins his “documentary work” of drawings of the destroyed city
1946–1949 reappointed as professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (Dresden Academy of Fine Arts)
1961 and 1980 national prizes 1978 Vaterländischer Verdienstorden (Patriotic Order of Merit), honorary citizenship of Chemnitz and Dresden
1982 died in Dresden
