An Interview with Chiharu Shiota by Andrea Jahn
The Berlin-based Japanese artist develops three-dimensional installations that surround the audience like a psychic space. The most remarkable characteristic of Shiota’s work consists of a gossamer of woolen threads that weaves the space, the objects in it, the performer, and the audience into a unit. Shiota works with her own body and personal found objects, such as clothing, shoes, or dolls, which are like the shells of memories spun into their own temporal and spatial dimension. Shiota is famous worldwide for her elaborate thread installations.
