Nicole Schuck
2381 km and a long walk / Works on Iceland
The relationship between our ideas and clichés of Iceland and our actual experiences in the country itself are the focus of Nicole Schuck’s Iceland project. Even before her visit to Iceland in 2006, she was working intensively with this “museum in our heads“, which was how she understood Iceland.
She hiked for two-and-a-half months over the island, on her own with a rucksack and a tent. These hikes were often strenuous: the wind and rain, her heavy pack and the loneliness were all very arduous. However, there was a great deal to see, and what Nicole Schuck saw and experienced, even if it seemed not very important, flowed into her artistic reflections of her trip. Drawings, films and performances have resulted from her hikes, with which she processed her experiences of the island.
