Roman Signer – Alles in Fluss

First prize-winner of the Ernst Franz Vogelmann Foundation

Since the 1970s Roman Signer (born 1938) has been reinventing the idea of sculpture. Instead of using classic sculptural materials, the artist works with fire, water, sand and air, which all undergo processes of transformation. The power of nature brings forth ephemeral, enigmatic sculptures that are documented in film and photographs. Thus Signer makes use of the fourth dimension of time. His works not only illustrate the monumentality and power of nature, but also demonstrate its function as a force beyond humanity: the simplicity and the elemental nature of the materials and forms make the works more accessible as does Signer’s take on the absurdities of everyday life and his subtile humour.
