Gustav Kluge

Egocinema

The artist Gustav Kluge focuses entirely on the human figure. His main theme is human existence in its poignant corporeality, its entrapment in slavery and degradation, in fear and intimidation.
While the thickly applied paint and ruptured surfaces emphasise the physical side of humanity, the artist also addresses the psyche: What is identity? What defines us? What conflicts exist between the body and the psyche, between our self-perception and the way in which others perceive us?
With more than 130 works dating from the early 1980s to the present day, this exhibition and catalogue provide the most comprehensive overview of Kluge’s artistic oeuvre to date.
